Written by Greg Bitgood
Summer Repeat - In this podcast (originally #37) Greg Bitgood interviews Steve Smith and Mark Daley about how Globalization affects Christian Education.

Globalization Interview

We hope to inspire, instruct and challenge you this year as educators whether you are teaching from home or a campus. Our goal is to equip anyone devoted to discipleship-based-Christian education. I also want to remind you that while supplies last we will send you a free copies of my book, Disciplining this Generation for a Digital World, to anyone that sends us an email. I will have the details at the end of the podcast.

We have been exploring the idea that every educator needs to be a futurist because we are shaping minds for the future. Today I am talking to two men whom I have great respect for their views of the future particularly regarding the issues of Globalization. Steve Smith, served as our Secondary Principal for three years before he began working full time as our Global Citizenship Director. We hope to take a group of our Online School kids this year to Mexico to experience Global issues from a completely different culture. Mark Daley is part of our Online School teaching staff and is heading up our Comparative Civilizations  program where students study the roots of western thought and how it has shaped our thinking today. He hopes to continue our program this year and take a dozen students to Europe in the Spring to see first hand the history and the thinking behind our culture. Our interview tried to address the issues of Globalization as it affects Christian education, though as you will see they both had strong feelings about the topic in a broader sense. I know this will be a helpful dialog for you as we consider these big issues. I apologize for the poorer quality as I had to conduct the interview using Skype, a globalizing technology:

I am going to continue this interview next week as both Mark and Steve. They both have more to say on this topic. An observation that I have in listening to both these men talk about the issue is that it is much deeper than just a technological and political phenomenon. Mark points out that there are underlying worldview forces at work that have to be considered and Steve is helpful to bring us back to our role in loving our neighbor as ourselves and the enormous responsibility this places on us to serve beyond our own agendas. This leaves us with some questions that we need to ask ourselves as Christians and as we prepare our kids to address the challenge. What would Jesus do? Are our views of this world and our culture inspired by our foundation in Christ or are they like everyone else? What should our response to this world be if we are truly walking in relationship with Jesus? How does this affect our loyalty to the forces that are challenging globalization? If in fact we are citizens of another world should we cling to nationalism and citizenships of this world which globalization is breaking down and altering?

Next week we will continue to consider the implications of Globalization and how this affects Christian education. We would love to hear from you and I deeply value your comments.
