111-Are You Discipling or Just Schooling Part 2 Print E-mail
Written by Greg Bitgood
In this podcast Greg continues part 2 of his workshop session at the BC Christian Home Educator's Convention. This week he contrasts the goals of Public Education to Christian Education and discipleship.

Hello fellow educators welcome to podcast number 111. Today I continue my session at the BC Christian Home Educator's convention where I gave a workshop entitled, "Are You Discipling or Just Home Schooling?" In last week's podcast I focused on an introduction of my own life and testimony raising four disciples over the last 25 years. I also spent some time talking about the importance of having Christian Educational goals over and above any specific methodology of education. Obviously, we are extremely supportive of home education as this entire conference was structured to serve the home school community. But I contrasted the need to focus on Christian Education over and above home schooling. By the way I reported that we had over 1000 participants but this number is much closer to 1100. This is quite amazing and we continue to grow almost 10% a year. This was our fifth year.

I received a great email about the convention and the podcast from Nola Morgan, one of our individualized teachers, who is doing an excellent job for us in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.

"HI Greg, I’m so pleased to see that you have done this week’s podcast on the topic of your workshop.  There was so many great workshops this year that I didn’t get a chance to come to yours- so thanks!  I wanted to drop a quick note to Thank you again for all that you do.  Being at the convention this past weekend reminded me again of what an amazing staff God has brought together in the Heritage Schools, and I’m so blessed to be a part of it all.  We island teachers look forward to that time in April as a time (away from our kidsJ) of encouragement, refreshing, and good laughs!  I so appreciate the generosity of KCC to provide the means for us to come to Kelowna a be a part of what is going on.  It could just be a requirement of the job, but the fact that we are given that stipend makes us enjoy the time even more! Anyways, I look forward to listening to another great podcast- do you know that you cook dinner with me a couple of times a month? You also come for a lot of runs with me too!   Keep them coming- they’re awesome! Blessings, Nola"

Some great suggestions for the podcast. If you haven't done it yet I would suggest you get an ipod or a good MP3 player and download the Christian Educator through ITunes every week. That way I can go jogging with you and won't need to exercise so much on my own time. Thanks Nola for your generous comments.

This week I spend some time beginning to contrast the Public School mission statement and goals here in British Columbia to our Christian perspective and goals. We are called to prepare our children for this world but not using the principles and goals of this world. In my session I refer to David a number of times. This is David Hazell who was our keynote speaker. I would recommend you go to the www.BCconvention.ca website and download his first keynote. In fact, he used several of the exact same passages of scripture that I used in my workshop session. I thought he was going to preach my message. Thankfully he has a very different story to tell with his family, nevertheless we were saying many of the same things all without any collaboration. Please forgive the poor quality of the recording as the room was difficult for sound. Here is part two of "Are you Discipling or Just Home Schooling:"
