101-A Christian Perspective of the Vancouver Olympic Print E-mail
Written by Greg Bitgood
The 2010 Vancouver Olympics have come and gone. Greg shares with three of our teachers who live right in the center of Vancouver and talks about their experience and tries to see this from a Christian perspective.

Hello fellow educators welcome to podcast number 101. Well its finished. As everyone knows for the last two weeks British Columbia has been immersed in the Olympic experience. When the games began I had the opportunity to watch from the US as I was spending time with my family in Phoenix. I returned to Vancouver amidst the energy and some hype to something very unique and somewhat magical. Watching from my television at home and listening to our Canadian commentators we all realized something else was happening in Vancouver that was being felt across Canada. Perhaps like never before Canada was finding its sense of community and identity. I doubt the rest of the world was feeling what we were feeling but clearly they were observing this phenomenon from afar. Putting on my American hat and talking with my family there seemed to be more of an education, almost a defence of who Canada really is. Certainly closing ceremonies illustrated our need to declare who we are, having celebrity after celebrity, nearly all of whom presently live in the United States,  come out of the closet and proclaim their patriotism. Perhaps that is the most telling aspect of who Canadians are, they are the people who always tell you who they are.

As a Christian Educator I had to awaken myself from time to time throughout last week and remind myself that I am not of this world. Yes I am a Canadian but I must never forget that I am first and foremost a citizen of heaven. My participation in this world is that of a dual citizen who must always be on the watch of serving two masters. These last two weeks we have beheld the world and Canada at its best. It was hard not to join in the celebration and, if kept in perspective, may have been a good thing.

Heritage has quite a few staff who live right in the middle of where everything was happening in the heart of Vancouver. I had the chance to talk with them and hear their views and, more importantly, try to look at this amazing experience that we all shared from a Christian perspective. Here is Sue Savard, Mark Daley and Eric Vanee. Three of our Grad Program teachers with Heritage Christian Online School:
