This podcast is a recent discussion Greg had with the Online Course Working Committee of Heritage Christian Online School. They discuss the question: "Should we emphasize academics over discipleship?" This discussion was inspired by the recent release of FSA results from the Fraser Institute.
Hello fellow educators, welcome to podcast number 99. Today I want to bring you a very interesting discussion I had with our Online Curriculum Working Committee who is giving oversight to the development of our world class Online school courses. I asked them the question "how much do we emphasize academic achievement over discipleship?" This discussion began in the context of trying to determine the relevance of the Foundation Skills Assessment tests (FSAs) we give to our Grade 4 and 7 students every year. Also, the Fraser Institute's, a public policy think tank, publishes a Report on School performance every year that ranks schools based upon their reading, writing and numeracy skills. Needless to say this is very controversial in the public forum. As Christian educators, though, should we be running to the well of school performance? And the larger question is what emphasis should we be giving to academics over and above discipleship. Here is my discussion with Mark Daley, Eric Vanee, Sue Savard, Pat Mackesy and Jeff Therrien: Audio only Please email us your comments and thoughts on this podcast.
