83 - Transformative Education Part 2 Print E-mail
Written by Greg Bitgood
This is part 2 of an interview with Heritage Christian Online School educators Mark Daley and Eric Vanee. We are discussing exactly what we mean by "transformative education" in a distance learning context. Both Mark and Eric talk specifically about the depth of their relationships with students using online technology.

Hello fellow educators welcome to podcast #83. Today we will present part 2 of a great interview with Mark Daley and Eric Vanee. We have been talking about what transformative education is all about. I should point out that both Mark and Eric are now exclusively online teachers but have spent considerable time in the classroom in the first part of their careers. I think you will captivated by their enthusiasm.

Before we jump into this I want to read a comment I received from Andy Matthies of Christian Academy of Louisville Kentucky. This is a good example of some the emails we receive from around the world almost every week:

"I am very happy to have been introduced to your podcast by a colleague. I have to admit, although I am a somewhat of a computer geek, I have not launched into the world of podcasting.

What I have been able to read online so far resonates deep within. I feel like I am starting a journey similar to yours. I graduated from college with a degree in Biblical Studies. God immediately put a desire in my heart to impact young people through education. I have now been a Christian educator for nine years. The last five years I have been blessed to teach middle school Bible.

Your thoughts on technology are particularly interesting to me. It seems to dominate the lives of  the young minds I am teaching. I want to learn how to effectively use technology in education as well as encourage the use by my students to reach and shape the culture they are living in. I have many questions. Many are probably answered in your book, Discipling This Generation for a Digital World. I would greatly appreciate a copy of that book.

I could go on, but I will cut this short and simply say thank you for your work. I look forward to the challenges God will bring my way through your ministry."

Thanks Andy. If you haven't yet received a copy of my book I will have details at the end of the podcast. Here is part 2 of our interview on transformative education. I apologize for a bit of background noise we did the interview in the Fairmont lounge at Vancouver Airport.

Thank you so much Mark and Eric. I know that some of what they have shared these last to podcast may be challenging some of our campus school educators. Last week I had a discussion with our VP of middle school who was quick to point out that many of the aspects of good student work and interaction happen in many if not most well taught campus programs. I agree with Paul on this at least in what I have witnessed at our campus school. What is interesting in this interview is the deep relational context in which these online guys are working with online students in online courses. It dispels the idea that you can't have close and meaningful relationships through distance learning technology. Are relationships different in an online context than in a campus school? Yes, but this doesn't mean they are anything less than face to face, they are just different.  In the next few weeks I hope to talk with some of our campus school educators about how they are pursuing transformative educational experiences and programs.
